Altered books and visual journaling (edited 29/02/2016)

Skimming through art history books, past course notes concerning psychology and personal journal entries

B. ‘Trauma does not lie in the speech part of the brain……. Trauma is a corruption of memory…. Trauma is about symptoms in the body parts that never completed what they had to do….’ (Recognizing Ancestral Baggage in the History of Trauma’ by Dr Isha McKenzie – Mavinga)

‘Internalised oppression is a term given to destructive attitudes and behaviours that result from the distress caused by oppression that has not been expressed and discharged from the mind and body. The oppression is re-enacted and causes low self-concept and powerlessness’ (Recognizing Ancestral Baggage in the History of Trauma’ by Dr Isha McKenzie – Mavinga)

‘We are confident that this will be the outcome for our field—for, as Freud told Einstein 83 years ago, “There is no greater, richer, more mysterious subject, worthy of every effort of the human intellect, than the life of the mind” (Quoted in Grubrich-Simitis, 1995, cited in Mark Solms & Oliver Turnbull’s 2011 article in The International Neuropsychoanalysis Society, retrieved from http://turnbulllab.bangor.ac.uk/documents/SolmsTurnbullWhatisNPSA2011.pdf)

C. ‘Prolonged trauma and victimization is about harmful lessons and training. In some sense it is like learning to speak and understand a language that one would be better off without’ (Tonya Alexandri, 2014 journal entry)
